Each porcelain chai cup in this series is unique with individual colour patterns created by placement in the kiln and ash. Finish achieved through reduction process of wood firing to 1200 Celsius. Cups measure approximately 4″ X 4″.
Growing up in India train travel meant open windows, dust blowing in from the endless farms we passed through, stopping at small and large stations to sample the different food vendors offered and drinking tea. Tea was usually 15 Paisa and was served scolding hot in bisque pit-fired disposable earthenware tea cups. The tea had a heavy Buffalo milk flavor, sugar was light, and the tea strong. This series is an homage to those disposable cups that have all but vanished and replaced by plastic which now litters the miles and miles of train tracks and don’t disintegrate like the old earthenware cups.
This series of porcelain tea cups was inspired by India’s famous earthenware chai cups found at every railway station and used to be synonymous with train travel in India. Each cup is unique in its shape and color, created by the flame currents within the kiln, and the ash from the reduction process of wood firing to 1200 Celsius.
